Research

Meaning, agency, and power in technical worlds.

My research follows the shifting boundary between human and machine—especially where technologies begin to sense, interpret, remember, and speak.

01

Grief technology · Biosemiotics

Thanasemiotics

Developing a vocabulary for meaning and affect that persist after biological death. This research asks how AI models trained on digital traces reconstitute the dead as interactive signs, and how meaning emerges through the coupling of mourner and machine.

02

Affect · Culture · Ethics

Emotional AI

Examining how systems that claim to detect, classify, or simulate emotion reshape social relations, institutional practices, and ideas of the human across different cultural settings.

03

AI companionship · 4E cognition

Artificial symbionts

Studying intimacy, trust, and semiotic agency in relationships with conversational AI, with particular attention to how meaning develops through sustained interaction rather than residing in either human or machine alone.

04

Work · Neurotechnology · Power

Neuro-Taylorism

Investigating workplace neurotechnology and the translation of bodily signals into simplified managerial knowledge, including the new asymmetries of authority produced by cognitive and affective monitoring.

05

Surveillance · Society 5.0

Dataveillance in Japan

Mapping the discourses and infrastructures through which data-driven surveillance is legitimised in Japan, from public safety and predictive systems to the broader imaginary of Society 5.0.
